SENTOSA GOLF CLUB'S SERAPONG COURSE IS SINGAPORE'S BEST
Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course is number one, again, in Singapore. After two years playing second fiddle to Tanah Merah’s Garden layout, the course that was home to the Barclays Singapore Open has come out with all guns blazing, securing the top spot in every category in the 2013 list.
Serapong’s climb back to the top of the pile by no means relegates Tanah Merah’s Garden Course in any way. These two courses are the most highly rated ones in the country by a good margin, and choosing between the two will always be difficult. While the designs are comparatively different – Garden is a land-locked, relatively flat resort-style layout designed by Phil Jacobs (together with former Tanah Merah Club President Tan Puay Huat), while Serapong is an, at times undulating, string of tight holes, many of which are set by the sea – what ties them together is the ability to maintain a high standard of maintenance day in, day out, throughout the year.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of this year’s rankings is the general improvement in rating points across the board for all clubs. The average point total of the 2011 rankings (21 18-hole combinations) was 63.30 out of a maximum 100. Our average for 2013 is 68.57. The general sense is that every club has the upgrading and maintenance of their courses on the forefront of their efforts. And this can only result in good things for all golfers in Singapore.
